About Modal Sarees

Modal sarees are soft, light and breathable, with a fluid drape that stays comfortable from a morning meeting to an evening function. At Daaraa Silks, our modal sarees carry some of India's best-loved hand crafts — Ajrak hand block printing from Kutch, Dhabu mud-resist printing with Kalamkari-style motifs, lustrous Mushroo patch borders and hand-stitched mirror work — along with plain natural-dye modal sarees for quiet, everyday elegance.

They are easy to wear to the office, day functions, festivals and family celebrations — elegant and full of craft, without the weight of a heavy silk.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a modal saree?

A saree made from modal, a soft plant-based fibre made from wood pulp. It feels smooth and silky, drapes fluidly and breathes well, which makes it comfortable in Indian weather.

Is modal silk the same as pure silk?

No. Modal has a silk-like softness and sheen, but it is not pure silk. "Modal silk" is the trade name for modal sarees with a silky finish. Each product page lists the exact fabric.

Are modal sarees handwoven?

No. The modal base fabric is mill-made. The craft work on it — Ajrak block printing, Dhabu mud-resist printing, mirror work — is done by hand, so small variations from piece to piece are natural and not a defect.

What is an Ajrak modal saree?

A modal saree hand block-printed in the Ajrak tradition of Kutch and Sindh, with deep geometric and floral motifs built up in layers.

Are modal sarees good for office wear?

Yes. They are light, breathable and easy to manage through long working hours. Striped Ajrak and plain natural-dye modal sarees are especially easy to wear to work.

How do I care for a modal saree?

Dry clean recommended. Do not wring or bleach, dry in shade, and avoid ironing directly on mirror work or tissue pallus.

Is shipping free?

Yes, Daaraa Silks offers free shipping across India.
